NAPT Trade Show Off to Fast Start

The National Association for Pupil Transportation’s 32nd Annual Trade Show opened Tuesday afternoon with a large crowd of attendees inspecting the more than 150 exhibits on the show floor. A wide range of products and services was displayed, with new offerings coming from bus manufacturers and other equipment and service providers.

Blue Bird School Bus Roll-Out Remains on Track

The 2007 roll-out of the first propane school bus offered in the U.S. by a major manufacturer since 2002 is on track, according to sponsors of the initiative, although at press time there had been no sales publicly announced prior to manufacture. Blue Bird Corp. (Fort Valley, Ga.) is forging ahead with plans to begin manufacturing a propane version of its Vision school bus in November following construction of two prototypes next month and crash testing in September.

Bluebird Goes Propane Blue with New Buses

Bus manufacturer Blue Bird recently announced dramatic changes to their buses’ look and operation, including a new, aerodynamic body style, GPS navigation systems… and cleaner engines operating on autogas. The new autogas [propane] powered bus is a product of the company's partnership with the Texas Railroad
Commission (see GAIN Spotlight page 7) and construction will start next year in order to deliver new buses for the 2007-08 school year.

Williams Announces Clean-Air School Bus

Railroad Commissioner Michael L. Williams today joined Blue Bird Corporation, Dallas County Schools , and state clean-air advocates to announce the availability early next year of a propane-powered full-size school bus. The Railroad Commission is Texas ' chief energy agency. The Commission's Alternative Fuels Division worked with Blue Bird, the Propane Education and Research Council (PERC), and Clean Fuels USA of Georgetown, Texas, to secure funding to develop and certify the low-emissions propane school bus.

Dedicated Autogas School Bus meets air quality specs in the US

The first-ever dedicated GM propane US school bus is now EPA and CARB certified. Tests conducted by the EPA demonstrate that autogas vehicles can produce 30 percent fewer toxics and other smog-producing emissions. The school bus has been touring for the past 5 months and has logged 16,000 miles nationwide. In Macon, Georgia, Department of Education officials were so impressed they voted to include the vehicles in their next purchase cycle. Dealership distribution agreements are now underway and letter of commitment are being taken.

Drew Bucci drove a school bus 2,800 miles from Portland, Ore., to Macon. I've heard of long bus routes, but this one seemed a little extreme. Of course, this was no ordinary school bus, either. Although it was yellow across the front, the sides were painted with green grass and blue skies. In the windows were caricatures of happy school kids. Beneath was a message: "We're breathing cleaner air."
